Born in Madrid, Guillermo Ortega is considered the most important Spanish cellist of his generation. He began his musical studies at age seven with Dagmar Remtova and made a degree in Music Performance obtaining the highest qualifications and Extraordinary Prize at the University Alfonso X (Madrid), under the direction of Asier Polo. Currently, he is doing a Master Soloist at the Musik-Akademie Basel with Rafael Rosenfeld. He has also received important impulse from Rainer Schmidt, Anton Kernjak, Sergio Azzolini and Valentin Erben.

Guillermo Ortega has been awarded with several prizes in competitions, including the first prize in the City of Vigo National Competition, third prize and prize for the best performer of Spanish music in Villa de Llanes International Competition, first prize at the IX Music Festival Intercentros Madrid with his chamber group, second prize in the National Competition Jaime Dobato Benavente, and second prize at the V Cello Festival Cello Arquillos.

Guillermo Ortega has performed in major Spanish and European concert halls, including Konzerthaus Berlin, Musikverein, Het Concertgebouw or Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda, Herbert Blomstedt, Heinz Holliger or Krzysztof Penderecki. Currently, he is an academist (“Praktikant”) in Tonhalle Orchester Zürich.

He is an active member of the Young National Orchestra of Spain (JONDE), and reserve member of the Gustav Mahler Jungendorchester (GMJO) and EUYO, and works regularly with several symphonic orchestras, such as Basel Sinfonieorchester, Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra or Spanish National Orchestra. Guillermo also has participated in the TV program Young Soloist, recording three programmes for the Spanish National TV.
