Born in Geneva, Jean-Valdo Galland began his musical studies at the Conservatory in Annecy. He studied the saxophone and chamber music, graduating with honors. While in Annecy, he also studied the piano, the double bass, orchestral conducting and composition. At the Haute Ecole in Lausanne he completed two Masters degrees, one in teaching skills and the other in musical performance.
Alongside this classical music academic career, he has always been passionate about exploring all kinds of music, including jazz, traditional music of the world (India, Ireland, Japan, Armenia, etc.), musical theatre, free improvisation, electronic music, and more. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician in many kinds of musical groups and orchestras across most of Europe as well as in Russia, Armenia and South America.
In 2006, he created a collective of composers, Zikali, with whom he creates music for films, animation movies, documentary, and video games. In 2013, his music for the movie A Fine Line won the best original soundtrack award. In 2016, he collaborated with the famous video game brand Ubisoft for the game STEEP.
One of Jean-Valdo Galland’s missions is to teach music. He works hard in this way in the French part of Switzerland. In 2015 he co-created SaxUp, an association that organizes saxophone events for all Swiss and French students. He teaches in the music school of Rolle and at the Conservatory of Music of Geneva.
