Wendel Quartet

Born in 2002, Jiayi Liu began playing the cello at the age of ten. Currently pursuing her studies at the Musik Akademie Basel with Professor Danjulo Ishizaka.

She has won the Young Musician Prize at the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann in 2022, and was a semifinalist at the George Enescu Competition in Bucharest 2024. Her previous accolades include Third Prize at the Buchet International Competition and First Prize at the Janigro Cello Competition Junior, where she also received the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra Award.

She has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in venues such as the Berliner Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Zürich Tonhalle, Romanian Athenaeum, Beijing National Centre for the Performing Arts, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall, and Oriental Art Centre. In the past season, Jiayi has collaborated with the Basel Sinfonieorchester and the Bodensee Philharmonie, further expanding her orchestral experience around Switzerland, in the upcoming season she will appear as soloist with Camerata Contrepoint Nyon for O.Schoeck concerto.
 

As a chamber musician, she is the member of the Wendel Quartet, based in Basel, Switzerland. Following their success at the Orpheus Competition 2024, the quartet appeared at the Swiss Chamber Music Festival, Musikdorf Ernen, Musica con Vista, and in Engelberg, and will be presented as ensemble in residence for Musikdorf Ernen 2026.

Jiayi has performed at renowned international festivals, including the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, Kronberg Festival, Mendelssohn Festival and George Enescu Festival. Through these appearances, she has shared the stage with distinguished musicians such as Vlad Stanculeasa, Ettore Causa, Barbara Doll, and Philippe Bach, among others.

She has received guidance from renowned musicians including Tabea Zimmermann, Frans Helmerson, Arto Noras, Steven Isserlis, Ivan Monighetti, Jens Peter Maintz, and Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt.

She is generously supported by the Rahn Kulturfonds, LGT Young Soloist Program, LYRA Stiftung, and the Morningside Music Bridge Program.

Jiayi currently plays on a Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi cello, kindly loaned to her through a private grant.
